The Spider Wars

Last night, I picked up a spider-related injury.

It is not what you think it is.

As you may or may not know by now, I am severely arachnophobic. I mean, I am scared of many things in life, but I can typically ignore those fears and continue with my life despite them. But spiders, they paralyze me. Or make me move faster than I have ever moved. Or both, in some instances.

I have been alone at home for the last week while my husband takes care of a family matter. It has been a nightmare. It started on Monday, when I started packing the dishes into the dishwasher from the kitchen basin, and, as I moved the last item, and a big hairy spider was sitting in the basin. Needless to say I could no longer use the basin.

There have been a few encounters with them during the week, from the dead spider carcass that blew across my desk to the small spider crawling out of the bushel of apples I was sorting.

But the final straw happened last night. I went outside for a last smoke (yes, I know, go away) and when I was ready to back inside, there is the eight legged monster sitting on the door, just above the door handle.

So, now I was trapped outside.

I tried throwing a few plant materials at it, but this had no effect, especially since it was all leaves and lightweight. I tried to throw my shoe at it several times, and missed each time.

By this time, I was frantic, and texting my husband. He’s sitting on the other side of the planet, watching me through the camera covering our back garden, probably laughing his ass off, and trying very hard to be supportive.

Finally he suggested that I should use the torch on my phone, light up the area around the hosepipe, and just use the hose to blast the bastard off the door.

It took me about ten minutes to work up the courage to do this, but finally, I managed to wrangle loose the hose pipe, turn on the tap and then blast the doors.

And the bastard slid himself in between the two doors, snug as a bug in a rug, avoiding the arctic blast of water coming his way.

Fuck.

But I persisted, and eventually managed to wash him out of there, and then he disappeared.

Ok, so I couldn’t see him anymore. Felt safe to return inside.

So carefully returned the hose to the web-covered hanging space on the wall, closed the tap while quietly dying inside and returned to the door, torch still on.

Yanked the door open and stepped back quickly, torch still my guiding light, no sign of the asshole on the inside of the doorframe. Ok. Scan around the door, and there is the little fucker, at the bottom of the door frame, right where I would enter.

Deep breaths.

I can do this.

So I haul myself in over the little step and into the house in a very swift movement, avoiding touching the ground around where the monster is hiding.

And as I step inside, I twisted my ankle.

Ignoring the pain, I yanked closed the door, locked it, and ran upstairs.

And so it came to be that I had a spider-related injury without ever touching one.

On Anger

I have been angry for pretty much my entire life. I was a livid teen, a raging young adult and furious in my thirties. I calmed down to a mild provocation in my early forties, but have found the wrath has returned recently.

I am annoyed by anti-vaxxers, who place other people’s lives at risk for their own misplaced beliefs that vaccines cause damage, even though this has been disproved.

I am irate with people who use dictator run countries as examples of why socialism is terrible, especially when countries like Sweden, Finland, Norway, Canada, and the Netherlands are shining examples of it working.

I am furious at people who still believe Trump is a better option. And don’t get me started on Brexiters.

I am fucking fuming at people who want to use constitutions to protect their own beliefs, but will cry foul when people with opposing beliefs want to do the same.

I am exasperated by those who spread othering, and unfounded fear of others. And fuck those who want to take away our freedoms, especially under the guise of ‘security’.

But mostly, I am angry at the fact that our previously left-leaning parents, who fought against Apartheid and raised us to believe in freedom, justice and equality, have now joined the ranks of the Trump-loving, fake-news spreading growing nebulous cloud of doom. And I feel completely powerless, because there is no way to fix this, because of the division that has been created in our societies. Because if I address it, I will be accused of shouting down a valid opinion, and opinions trump (ha!) facts these days.

Return of the blogger

It has been such a long time since I’ve blogged here. I am not promising a revival either.

WP_20160212_004

I didn’t even complete my own 52 week challenge, because, you know, shit happens. And I suck at challenges. Sometimes, writing in public spaces puts pressure on for a certain kind of content, and, once one starts gaining readers, the pressure to continuously deliver content is hard. It also, for me, removes the ability to write freely. To work around this, I simply blogged, albeit sporadically, somewhere else. I’d like to reclaim this space again, but, no promises.

WP_20160127_006

The last post I made here cryptically referred to it being my last trip to Cape Town. I left my best ever employer at the end of November after a series of decisions made in possibly the wrong frame of mind. I returned to best ever employer at the beginning of January after a series of apologies and possibly better decisions. This means I am travelling again, but not quite as frequently as before. Since returning, I have been to Cape Town three times, Lisbon (Portugal) once, Abuja (Nigeria) once, and I am currently in Seattle. I am feeling a lot more positive about everything, even though I kick myself on occasion for making the decision to leave in the first place. Sometimes, we need to make bad decisions to appreciate the good moments.

WP_20160214_006

Our best friends left us at the end of last year for different shores. This changed a couple of things in our lives. For starters, it meant our friends were no longer a couple of blocks away, and time with them have moved into a virtual space. I am forever grateful for Skype and WhatsApp.

My bestie left South Africa a long time ago, but it was manageable, because we were already interacting more online than in person before she left. So while I miss her terribly, I could deal with it. Our other best friends we saw weekly in person, so their departure has been hard for both my husband and myself. It has reopened discussions about possible relocation to European shores, and I think we have pretty much decided that we will be pursuing this actively in the near future.

My beautiful boy, Frank, left me for the big catnip patch in the sky a few months ago. My heart is still hurting every day.

I think this is one of the reasons it has been so hard getting back into blogging, especially photo blogging. Because at least 70% of my photos are of him, and I ache every time I browse my photos.

There’s no sunshine…

I woke up this morning to the news of Robin Williams’ passing. Suspected suicide. And I was devastated.

I have written about Bipolar Disorder from time to time. About what it is like to live with it. And that has always been my mantra. I live with Bipolar, I don’t suffer with it. I don’t let it define me.

And, as many do when they are diagnosed, I also found some people to look up to. To inspire me to continue when the black dog chases me. To help me make sense of this chemical imbalance in my brain that seems to affect every part of who I am. A quick Bing will return a long list of celebs that have admitted to ‘having’ Bipolar, and Robin Williams is one of them. And I looked up to him. Because he was a survivor. No matter what this disease threw at him, he pursued his passions and his brilliance shone through his darkest moments. He was an inspiration.

And when I saw the news, I broke down. Because if, after so many years of surviving and inspiring, the black dog got him. And if it could get him, then how do I stop it from getting me?

So excuse me in my little shallow moment as I shed tears for a man I’ve never met.

Bipolar on my mind*

In 2003, I went crazy. And not long after, I spent some time in a hospital, where I learnt I wasn’t actually crazy, but just a little unwell. And there was Karen, who could have been my mirror, if she wasn’t Zulu. And she loved this song.

I was standing in the shower this evening, thinking, as one does, about life and things, and this song popped into my head, and I instantly wondered what happened to Karen. Because I suck at keeping in touch with people. I really do. I try, and with Facebook and Twitter, it has become easier, but I suck at keeping in touch.

But as I was thinking, I realised it was 2013. Ten years since my last breakdown. And then I thought about the 10 years before that, and realised I had another breakdown then. And then years before that, I had my first. So I cannot help but wonder…

But maybe, since I’ve named the dragon, and I know what it looks like, just maybe I have it under control?

In just 22 days, we will be at the coast for 6 days of sunshine and mountain and ocean. I think we really do need a holiday. And I look forward to playing the tourist game in our own country.

Oh look, clouds.

WP_20130303_009

And when we come back, we pack and hopefully find a new home to live in as a temporary base until we figure out where our next step is. Because stuff. And things. And places.

* with respect, the title is a play on this:

Mostly because that was the in-head entertainment during the shower that sparked all of this.

I still wonder what happened to Karen. But I can’t exactly post on Twitter that I am looking for my long-lost Zulu sister from the looney bin. But maybe I can find her on Facebook. I’ll go looking. Watch this space.

Stripper puppets, asthmatic chameleons and volcanic ponies

Where has the past month gone? Whoooooshh…

logoA month ago, I took part in the democratic process by not only voting in our local elections, but by also spending the day working at a voting station as a party agent. I woke up super-early the morning of the 18th of May and arrived at the voting station before 6am to witness the opening and unpacking and sealing of the ballot boxes and the setting up of the voting station. I spent just about the entire day at the voting station – apart from the 2 hours I spent going to vote at another station and charge my phone – and stayed for the count at the end. It was a long day – I was awake for 23 hours straight – but it was worth it.

I think it is something that each voter should do at least once. It makes you appreciate the system, and I definitely gained some trust in the process, and the IEC. Speaking of which, the IEC staff were wonderful, friendly and helpful all the way through, even though they were also awake from very early that morning. The guy in charge was incredibly dynamic, and he handled a very difficult and long day with grace and the patience of a saint, while being incredibly competent at keeping the wheels going.

woa_2011_sold_out_web_3_smOther than that, in 42 days time the husband and I are off on our very first adventure, and we have spent the past month getting our visas in order, buying the last of the camping gear and practised setting up the tent. We have also booked all our hotels and train tickets, which means we are set to go. I am still struggling to wrap my head around the size of Wacken (the festival, not the town), because my brain simply cannot comprehend seventy five thousand people in one place. I am really looking forward to seeing the sights and hope I can capture each sight adequately photographically.

We had a brief moment of panic when another Icelandic volcano erupted and caused some havoc with air traffic in Europe, but luckily that seems to have calmed down now. And I have made friends with Iceland. tumblr_lluv7yUtMj1qc8mzro1_500Tonight, while in conversation with the family, I brought up the Icelandic ponies and volcanoes, which immediately conjured up images of cute ponies ala Viva Piñata somersaulting into an active volcano. Much laughter ensued.

ponockyrf6I have been playing a lot of Viva Piñata recently. I started over, because I finally have my own XBox and profile, so I am raking up my own gamer score now. I have finally broken my previous scores, and am starting to attract some interesting piñatas to my garden, the strangest of these to date being the Jameleon, which really sounds like an asthmatic chameleon, especially when it is sleeping.

Jameleon Romance Video

My daughter started her first exams for high school this week, and the first subject was Art and Culture. The grade’s classes were divided into smaller groups, and each group was tasked with putting together a 60 second puppet show. On the way to school one morning, she told us about seeing one of the other groups’ puppet, and it happened to be a stripper, “with a g-string and everything”. Much laughter ensued.

bipolar1Laughter is a frequent friend, and it is good. I must just sometimes remind myself of this. Been a bit wound up recently, and swinging between what feels like more than two poles, each with their own brand of insanity woven through the cracks. I am missing writing again very much right now, but as soon as I sit down in front of the keyboard, the words are gone. I sure do hope they return, because there are many many stories that still need to be told. Maybe my muse awaits in the country of my ancestors. And hey, I wrote a blog post. With words and everything. 671of them to boot. There is hope for us yet, captain.

Saturday 8:15

The past couple of weeks have been very strange. Actually, I think things started going weird sometime in December, and it only really feels like normality is starting to set in now for the first time. Not sure if it has anything to do with the fact that we didn’t go on holiday in December, and only really took a break now over Easter for the first time. And honestly, I cannot tell you why things have been strange, what has been strange or why I say it. It just feels like the world has been slightly off-centre for some time.

Mostly, my mind has been occupied by the following things:

  • The upcoming local government elections: I have finally decided to become politically active again, and formally joined the party that makes the most sense to me right now. This means I get to wear the official t-shirt, hand out flyers and work at one of the voting stations on election day. I thought I would start off small, but would like to eventually run for ward councillor and see where we go from there.
  • Our trip to Germany: less than 3 months to departure, and still so much to do. Actually, just need to still book our accommodation and train tickets, everything else is done. We have our Schengen visa interview on the 23rd of May, and I will book the accommodation and train tickets thereafter.

I have also been trying to separate my work from home life, so that I can stop thinking of work all the time and actually start thinking about other stuff. For this reason, I have stopped unpacking my (work) laptop in the afternoons when I get home from work, and have been using the netbook for surfing, etc. It has been taking some time to adjust, but I think I am getting the hang of it. And it has helped with my brain switching off earlier at night, so I am also sleeping better. Who knew.

Ramblings

DSC02322I am finally in Vegas. In fact, the first day of MMS is already over.

The flights here were horrible. Our first flight was from Johannesburg to Atlanta, and this flight was delayed by quite some time. Initially, it was delayed by an hour, which we were prepared for. This gave me more time with my family and friends who came to see me off at the airport. I should add though that I woke up at 2h30 that morning – not because I had to, but simply because I could no longer sleep. So, by the time I got to the airport, I had already been awake for 14 hours, and started to run on empty. Booking in was easy, boarding was a whole different story. It took forever. And then, once we were on the plane, some technical mishap happened, which delayed our flight even more. But now we were on the plane, seated and tucked, and could no longer move around. And we sat like that for almost two hours before take-off.

I wrote this while on the plane between Johannesburg and Atlanta:

I am severely sleep deprived. If the clock on my netbook and the inflight stats is anything to go by, I haven’t really had sleep in well over 24 hours. It is dark outside the plane.

It is 8:50 Sunday morning back home. I am somewhere over the ocean, approaching the Caribbean. According to the inflight stats is it now 2:50am in Atlanta, which is where this plane is headed. Our flight was delayed by well over 2 hours – which I think has added to my exhaustion.

The outside temperature is –47C. So glad I’m not out there. We have travelled 9577km already. We are travelling at a 19872 altitude and groundspeed of 820mk/h. This is considerably slower than the 927km/h we did a couple of hours ago. I have been in this plane for more than 12 hours already.

DSC02333Things got worse after this. Because our flight was delayed so much, I missed my connecting flight to Las Vegas. Luckily the airline had updated their offices in Atlanta (guess they have to) and all of us were rebooked on later flights. However, because Sunday is apparently a popular day for travelling in the US, and Vegas is a popular destination, the earliest flight I could be booked on was at 13h30. We arrived in Atlanta at 08h45(ish). So I had to navigate this foreign airport in a foreign country all by myself, and then sit and wait for almost 5 hours for a flight. Amazingly, I didn’t get lost, and I found the boarding gate in this massive airport, and even managed to locate the smoking lounge and a shop where I bought a bottle of Coke.

But, by this time I was exhausted. I was uncomfortable on the flight to Atlanta, and didn’t sleep a wink, so by the time I boarded the plane to Vegas, I was bordering on delusional. And by the time I booked into my hotel, I was completely and utterly miserable. Luckily the check-in went without a hitch and the staff were incredibly friendly – maybe they could see the crazy lurking in my eyes – but I was still ready to just pack it up and go home.

Vegas is an interesting place. It is not quite as big as I had thought, and it is (currently) not as hot as I thought it would be. But then you start walking around, and the picture changes a little. It is a city of paradoxes. It is described as a Disney land for adults, and yet every hotel/resort has attractions aimed at kids.

My colleague and I had some spare time this morning after registration before our first session, so we went for a quick walkabout. Here are some of the pictures I took:

DSC02404DSC02402DSC02388DSC02391DSC02392DSC02380DSC02375DSC02376DSC02358

When I get home, I will compile the best photos from this trip and upload high-res ones to Picasa.

I finally got some good sleep last night, and got to speak to my family today, so I feel a lot better about the trip. The sessions I attended today were great (check my tech blog for possible posts about the sessions themselves), so all is right in the world again. I am not going to start making soap, don a aligator tail and trash my hotel room or start any kind of club where the first rule states that you’re not allowed to talk about the club.

I just have one question: why is it just about impossible to buy Coke in Vegas?

Germany 2011

The husband and I have been talking for some time about taking our first trip across the ocean some time next year, and have finally decided on a destination and time frame.
Destination: Germany
Time: August 2011
I want to attend the Wacken Open Air festival, which will be taking place from 4 to 6 August 2011. The husband also wants to take a turn around the Nurnburg ring. Here is the route I have planned right now:
  • Fly from Jo’burg to Hamburg to arrive 3 August 2011.
  • Make our way from Hamburg to Wacken for the 4th, spend 2 days at Wacken
  • Return to Hamburg for a day or so, and then make our way down to Nurnburg where we will spend at least 2 days
  • Make our way to Frankfurt, spend a couple of days there and then fly back from Frankfurt to Jo’burg.
View Germany trip 2011 in a larger map
I’d love some suggestions of things we can do along the way, or any tips on planning our trip or anything else that may be useful Smile

Sunday morning 8:39

  • DSC01390 We desperately need rain now. It hasn’t rained since early June and Jozi is covered in a layer of dust, which is absolutely killing my respiratory tract.
  • The past couple of weeks have been insane. Life has changed and changed and changed yet again. I am making peace with it.
  • We finally dragged our lazy asses into a gym yesterday and signed up. We then dragged our lazy asses through several sports equipment stores and ensured we had the proper outfits for each of the activities we plan on participating in at said gym. Hopefully today, we will actually start with said activities.
  • I went to a club last night – oh my word what a beautiful place – for the first time since I quit drinking at the beginning of the year. It was interesting to note that there aren’t that many options for non-drinkers at night clubs.
  • I’m off on a jet plane again in a week’s time in October, this time to Durban for Tech-ed. Yeah baby. (somehow, in my mind, departure date was the 3rd of October - turns out it is only the 17th)

Life, my universe and everything

DSC02323 I finally managed to download all  parts of the Visual Studio 2010 (trial) today. Finally. For some strange reason, the third file kept failing. I am guessing I downloaded dodgy cached copies, but nevertheless, I can finally install it. My geeky heart is doing cartwheels.
This week has been tough. Actually, the past two weeks have been rough. I’ve had some disappointing times with friends, and in some cases, it has impacted on all aspects of my life. And it has been tough. I have had to make some very tough decisions, that the human in me is still crying about, but sometimes you reach that point where you can no longer help people, and you have to put the happiness of your own family above anyone else. Oh well.
But, the past week has been tough. Have had to almost pull a rabbit out of a hat or three this week, work-wise, but pulled through with all my teeth and fingers, so I guess it ended up all right. I am just really, really tired, and looking forward to a week-end of reading and snuggling in bed. Because, of course, the rain returned.
Did I mention the rain? Right.
DSC02281I saw some pictures of myself taken last year, and almost cannot believe just how corpulent I was. I hate weight talk, but I realised today that I have managed quite nicely to reduce my general circumference and felt the need to write about it a little. It can only be good. I have noticed since my lifestyle change earlier this year, I have managed to shrink gradually without cutting out the nice things, like chocolate or cheese. I did buy some soy milk and rice milk today, to try alternatives, but I am not sure there is anything that could replace cheese in my future. It has now been four months since I last had meat, and I feel great. Still no cravings and I feel healthy. Still no change in my sleeping habits, but I never expected benefits there. I will need to get way more active to stabilise my sleeping habits. Baby steps.
There are only 48 days until the world is on our doorsteps. I like the anticipation that is building – even if not for all South Africans. Can’t wait to welcome the world :)

[challenge]

What colours would your wedding be/was your wedding? One day, when the husband and I do it proper*, I think the wedding will be Star Wars/Steampunk themed, with lots of black :)

Scrubs or Greys Anatomy? Scrubs.

Do you pick your battles? Or do you fight for everything you disagree with? Or do you let it all go? I try to pick my battles, mostly, and try and only fight the ones I think I can win. But I may sometimes take up a battle that I have no chance of winning, simply because it goes against everything I believe in.

Bar One or Whole Nut? Bar One

Where is your favourite holiday destination? The Garden Route, somewhere with beach, sun, mountains and fresh air, kinda like this:

 DSC01062 DSC01114

High School Musical or Cinderella? Cinderella

You are buying a new house what is the one thing the house must have? Library space.

Spring or autumn? Spring

Have you every skinny dipped before? Yes.

Yoga or Kata Box? Yoga

If you had to study what would you study? Being in IT, I kinda have to study all the time. If I had to study something outside my field, it would have to be something related to space – astro-physics, engineering, that kind of thing. Or possibly just another language.

* the Husband and I got married one afternoon at the Home Affairs offices, with my mom and his dad as witnesses. At the time, it suited us, because we didn’t want a big affair, but recently, I have been thinking that, if I could do it again, I would do the proper wedding thing with the dress and the flowers and everything else. We have been talking about renewing our vows on our 20th anniversary, and doing it proper then. As long as I can wear the Vader mask, I am happy :)

Lifestyle, great ideas and a bit of green

DSC01756 As you, my one and only reader, may have noticed, this blog looks a little different suddenly. I decided to finally consolidate my blogs into one, and give this one a long-overdue facelift (one that involves more than just a new banner).

Over the years, my way of living has slowly changed, but at the beginning of this year, I made quite a drastic lifestyle change that has had a significant impact on so many aspects of my life. The change? Simply, I stopped eating meat. Yes, I have become a vegetarian. For the most part, this was due to the fact that my body decided it can no longer process meat – I felt ill every time I ate meat – but there is an ethical decision behind it too. I am not going to go into all the reasons, because you have heard it all before. But I must say I do feel very good – much healthier, with more energy all round. DSC01836 It hasn’t quite solved my sleeping problems, but I suspect that has something to do with the amount of chocolate I consume :)

The biggest challenge for me, who has grown up a carnivore with a distinct aversion to most vegetables, was to find ways of cooking without meat that was still tasty. I have been experimenting quite a bit with trusty recipes and meat-replacement products, such as the Fry’s range, with some great results. I have also started substituting meat in recipes with other alternatives, such as lentils and butternut, with rather pleasing results – especially because the Fry’s range can work out rather pricey. I post the success-recipes to the family blog.

Of course, this gives me more motivation to keep my veggie garden growing. I quite like the idea of this urban garden:

the_urban_garden

And suspect this will be my next big DIY project. It doesn’t quite give enough space for the runners, like the squashes, but those I will plant in the other big project I am about to tackle: building a new patch for the Dude (our tortoise).

And then, a fellow Saffer blogger had a great idea, watch her video:

What makes this a great idea for me is that, ultimately, there are no real losers in this deal. I often wonder if we cannot rather set up funds like this to pay our tax-money into, rather than donating it to our government – where there are no obvious winners other than government officials and their families. I would be happy to pay the high amount of income tax and other taxes I currently do, if I could see the benefits of that money in our country.

Goodbye 2009

May flowers always line your path and sunshine light your day.
May songbirds serenade you every step along the way.
May a rainbow run beside you in a sky that's always blue.
And may happiness fill your heart each day your whole life through.

Consolidation

I did the unthinkable, and merged my Wordpress blog into this one.

I say unthinkable, because it seems that everyone goes the other way around – moving from Blogger/Blogspot to Wordpress. The complete lack of documentation out there proves this right.

Why did I chose to retain Blogger and move away from Wordpress?

Mostly, because I like Blogger and the flexibility it gives me in terms of look and feel. I have spent an immense amount of time recently customising all my Blogger blogs (with the help of some really generous people who have made some really stunning templates available for free), and have found the ability to do this at Wordpress lacking, unfortunately.

I am not saying I dislike Wordpress, or that I ever received bad service or outages or anything.

That said, I have been with Blogger for the better part of 8 years, and have never really had any issues, and thus decided to consolidate this way.

I will write a blog entry shortly on exactly how to do this.

But, the purpose of this blog entry, I suppose, is also to define what I am going to be doing here.

My WP blog was typically for my political rants, and some random thoughts. This blog has, since inception, done nothing but collect hordes and hordes of links – a little pointless, considering I also add them to Stumble.

For the sake of history, I am keeping all entries from both blogs here (and I will be spending the next couple of days fixing up the entries I imported from WP), but, going forward, this will be the blog replacing my WP blog as well as my Live Spaces blog.

I will be migrating all the posts from my LS blog here too in the next day or so – once I can figure out how many blog posts there are to be exact, so that I can use the nifty tool I downloaded earlier (which will be covered in the promised post about the migration).

So, what you can expect to see here going forward:

  • Tech stuff: anything from deep tech to gadgets, as the mood grabs me.
  • Political bitching, because it is part of my every day life :)
  • Random thoughts about life, the universe and everything.

This should be the last time I do this kind of consolidation. I say should with a capital Maybe.

Although you may have delays and struggles in life, your hard work will pay off in the long run, especially after age 34-40. You are ambitious, goal-oriented, but may tend to put too much emphasis on material assets. You seek authority and status.
