windows 7

I wrote 3 articles this week on Windows 7, as follows:

Last night, the husband reinstalled our Media center machine to Windows 7 as well. The Xbox connected no problem, so it looks like it might be a winner. More testing will happen this week-end, so another round of reviews/articles/bitches should follow next week.

Efficient Use of Water

During 1984, an estimated 1.25 million acre feet of water were used by Texans in the care and maintenance and residential landscapes. Texas is expected to soon become the second most popular state in the U.S. with two-thirds of the population located in urban/suburban areas. With this growth, conservative estimates indicate water needs will increase 75 percent by the year 2000. Thus, conservation, reclamation and efficient use of water resources will become increasingly important.

Essentially all water used in Texas is derived from precipitation. Part of the precipitation flows into streams, ponds, lakes and reservoirs, and some of this eventually reaches the Gulf; another portion infiltrates the soil to the rooting zone of plants; a third portion percolates below the rooting zone and becomes groundwater.

Surface water sources are recharged rapidly, but groundwater reservoirs such as the Ogallala Aquifer, are recharged very slowly. The Ogallala Aquifer is slowly being exhausted in some areas of heavy pumping. The proportion of precipitation received in Texas that is returned to the atmosphere as water vapor is estimated to be 70 percent from non-irrigated land areas and 2 percent from irrigated areas. Most of this loss represents evaporation or transpiration from plant surfaces.

RIP Cool Hand Luke

Paul Newman "The Silver Chalice"Paul Newman, the legendary movie star and irreverent cultural icon who created a model philanthropy fueled by profits from a salad dressing that became nearly as famous as he was, has died. He was 83.
Newman died Friday at his home near Westport, Conn., after a long battle with cancer, publicist Jeff Sanderson said.
Stunningly handsome, Newman maintained his superstar status while protecting himself from its corrupting influences through nearly 100 Broadway, television and movie roles. As an actor and director, he evolved into Hollywood's elder statesman, admired as much offscreen for his quiet generosity, unconventional business sense, race car daring, political activism and enduring marriage to actress Joanne Woodward.

Biodiesel

With the price of crude oil predicted to reach $200 a barrel later this year and our carbon footprint bigger than ever, now is as good a time as any to look at alternative power sources. Unfortunately, we still need to work, which means driving to work, and I don't know about you, but I cannot afford to replace my vehicle at this point in time. Public transport in South Africa is also limited, so I am stuck with driving at this moment.

I have found a couple of great articles on making biodiesel, and some of these options actually look like they are do-able by any home body.

NB: I have not tried any of these methods, so I cannot vouch for their effectiveness or safety. Always take precautions when working with chemical reactions, and be sure to be aware of the laws of your country before attempting any of these recipes.

Collapsing Neu-Organs, Einstürzende Neubauten and the Body Without Organs

In the womb of Einstürzende Neubauten the machines of desire are constantly laid bare, like a fulminating factory, constantly bursting and colliding, brimming with the anomalous, falling out of orbit, a wounded song, a shooting star, a scorched sense, une dent-de-lionion (dandelion).
