from Chapter 22 of er, The Novel (as it is currently known, due to lack of any appealing title)
Pat opened her toolkit, and took out a pair of pliers and an almost-screwdriver. She bent over the man, and started pulling strands of light from him, pinning them on either side with golden pins that she carefully removed from a purple jar. When she finished pinning the strands, she took a small hammer and hit each strand in a different place, producing different sounds and brief sparks of light. She compared each strand with the diagrams she had drawn when Sarah was in this position, and made neat notes on a separate piece of paper.
