2010 in review: Music

Yes, it is December again, which means it is time to reflect on the year that’s gone. This year, I decided I will start with music.

My listening habits this year changed quite considerably from the past couple of years, but I feel like I have gone back to my roots. I’ve always had a fondness for world music, but also for the darker side of music, and this year, I found some nice fusions of my favourite sounds.

Top 20 artists for the year as follows:

Kaizers Orchestra has moved to top position, not just for the last 12 months, but replaced Einsturzende Neubauten in the overall top position too. But more significant for me was the (albeit late) discovery of the Folk Metal genre, and bands like Korpiklaani (who I expect to see in the top 20 overall in the near future). I was even lucky enough to get to see Ensiferum live right here in South Africa – which was an absolutely blast and cemented my love for this genre even more.

2011 promises to be interesting, with Rammstein visiting South African shores and my family and I planning a trip to Germany for Wacken.
