2009 in review - Music

1222799_melody_of_the_forest_2 I cannot live without music. I am always listening to something or another. I tend to become a little obsessive about certain songs/bands and will listen to them over and over, especially if they are new discoveries and speak to my soul.

According to Last.fm, these are the bands I listened to most over the past 12 months:

  1. Kaizers Orchestra
  2. Abney Park
  3. The Parlotones
  4. Bauhaus
  5. Einsturzende Neubauten
  6. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
  7. The Killers
  8. The Breeders
  9. Deine Lakaien
  10. DeVotchKa
  11. Muse
  12. Johnny Hollow
  13. Diary of Dreams
  14. Gogol Bordello
  15. HIM

Favourite new finds:

  • Abney Park
  • Johnny Hollow
  • Gogol Bordello
  • DeVotchKa
  • Balkan Beats

According to Last.fm, my top tracks for the past year are as follows:

  1. Abney Park – Airship Pirate
  2. Kaizers Orchestra – Bastard Sonn
  3. Johnny Hollow – This Hollow World
  4. Kaizers Orchestra – Ond Sirkel
  5. The Parlotones – Perfect Place
  6. Kaizers Orchestra – Moment
  7. DeVotchKa – Basso Profundo
  8. DeVotchKa – Undone
  9. Kaizers Orchestra – Enden av November
  10. Kaizers Orchestra – Maskineri
  11. Kaizers Orchestra – Apokalyps Meg
  12. Abney Park – Thornes and Brambles
  13. The Killers – Andy You’re A Star
  14. Kaizers Orchestra – Den Andre Er Meg
  15. Abney Park – White Wedding

For me, the best musical moment of this past year was seeing The Killers live in concert. It has been a while since I’ve seen an international act, and the Killers put on a spectacular show.

I have also reconnected with my roots this year, both by rediscovering music I have always loved and by discovering new genres that complement the music of my soul. I suppose adding the Steampunk genre was a natural flow out of my love for old-school Goth, while the addition of Gypsy Punk has been a pleasant surprise albeit natural, considering my love for other languages and the Balkan sound. I look forward to discovering even more music in 2010.

So, what music moved you in 2009?

Just added you on Last.fm, then!
It is a cool site, even if it was way better when it was for free ;-)

:) The fact that there is a Last.fm app for iPhone is what made me finally decide to get one. It is such an awesome app (and will make up for me not being able to carry around 80gb of music anymore).

Kasabian, Editors and Muse were my best albums. Parov Stelar was my greatest discovery.
