Time for change

1037633_inflight I am still not sure this is the right place for this, but my brain keeps reasoning that this is something that affects the entire family, so this is probably the best place to stick it.

What is it, exactly?

It is our relocation plans. Because, yes, we have made up our minds and we are going to (attempt) relocating to a new country.

I, no, we need somewhere to keep track of our plan, and a blog is the ideal place, because:

  1. it is accessible anywhere
  2. we can look back easily to see our progress
  3. it may, at some point, help someone else in the same situation.

This is a tough decision to make. Leaving behind family and friends, the place you grew up in, the place you were born in. This country contains all our memories, all our experiences.

But it is time for a change.

So, where are we in all of this? Right at the beginning. We have completed our passport application forms, but we haven’t handed them in yet. We have pretty much decided where we want to go to, and started keeping an eye on the job market in our desired country.

Q and I still have a couple of exams left to complete the MCSE qualification, but we are on track to complete it by December.

We would like to be in our new country by January 2010 by the latest, which means we have 2009 to do the following:

  • Get visas/green cards
  • Convince the desired' country’s government that we will make good citizens
  • Sell our house
  • Sell our car
  • Sell all our belongings
  • Get the cats vaccinated, etc
  • Complete another qualification or two
  • Find jobs in new country

Amongst other things. I am sure over coming months we will add onto this list rapidly and, as we learn more about this process, more things will creep out of the woodwork that I did not even contemplate.

This is the first step.
